The Richland Font Review: A Bold Display Typeface for Retro Branding

There’s something oddly satisfying about opening a blank brand board and watching it slowly come to life with color, texture, and typography. I was testing The Richland on a recent boutique identity project, and from the first moment I placed it on a logo draft, I knew this font had a unique character that stood out.

The Richland is a gorgeous and bold display font, crafted to give your headlines and logotype projects a retro touch. It has a distinct personality — think of a vintage poster from the mid-20th century, but with modern precision. Its curves are confident, its edges are clean, and the overall look feels like a bridge between classic design and contemporary branding needs.

A Logo Draft That Stood Out

I used The Richland as the primary typeface for a café visual refresh project. The client wanted a warm, inviting brand that felt nostalgic yet fresh. When I applied The Richland to the logo concept, the results were instant. The font’s boldness gave the name presence, while its subtle swashes and glyphs added a sense of craftsmanship.

Compared to other display fonts I’ve tested, The Richland didn’t feel too ornate or too minimalist. It struck the right balance between making a statement and maintaining readability. It worked well with both serif and sans-serif supporting fonts, which is always a plus when building a cohesive brand system.

From Packaging Mockups to Website Headers

The Richland shined in more than just the logo. On a packaging mockup for the same café project, it looked great on a coffee bag label. The retro vibe matched the client’s vision perfectly, and the PUA encoding allowed me to access all the glyphs and swashes needed to add visual interest without overcomplicating things.

On the website header, I paired The Richland with a clean sans-serif font for body text. This combination created a strong visual hierarchy, ensuring that the headline grabbed attention while the supporting text remained easy to read. It also translated well to social media graphics — an Instagram post using The Richland as the main text felt instantly engaging and professional.

Even on a business card, The Richland maintained its charm. It wasn’t too large or overwhelming, and the contrast with a simple sans-serif font made the information clear and approachable.

When to Use and When to Avoid The Richland

The Richland excels as a display font, headline font, or logo font. It’s not ideal for long-form text, such as paragraphs of body copy or small print sizes where legibility can suffer. For formal corporate use, especially in industries that require strict professionalism, it might be better to pair it with a more traditional typeface.

However, for creative studios, handmade shops, local restaurants, or any brand looking to inject a bit of nostalgia into their visuals, The Richland is a solid choice. It brings energy to editorial designs, adds flair to product labels, and makes posters and flyers feel more dynamic.

Practical Tips for Using The Richland

If you’re considering The Richland for a project, test it in context before committing. Place it next to supporting fonts, see how it looks at different sizes, and ensure it aligns with your brand’s tone and audience expectations. Also, don’t forget to check the commercial font licensing if you plan to use it in client work, templates, merchandise, websites, or print-on-demand products.

Font pairing is another area to consider. The Richland pairs well with a modern sans-serif for a balanced look, or with a script font for a more handcrafted feel. If you're working on a multilingual project, make sure the font supports the necessary characters and languages.

In summary, The Richland is a versatile and stylish display font that can elevate your branding efforts. Whether you're designing a logo, packaging, or social media content, it brings a retro charm that’s hard to ignore. Just remember to use it wisely — where it shines brightest, and where it won’t compromise clarity or professionalism.
