Butterpress: A Playful Display Font for Digital Branding

I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store that sells handcrafted home goods, and I needed a font that felt both whimsical and trustworthy. The brand had a retro vibe with a modern twist, and I wanted something that would stand out without being overwhelming. That’s when I stumbled upon Butterpress—a display font that immediately caught my eye.

Butterpress has a playful, retro feel with subtle crafty details. It’s not too ornate, but it carries enough personality to make any text pop. The curves and flourishes give it a handcrafted charm, making it perfect for brands that want to convey creativity and warmth. As a display font, it works best in larger sizes, which makes sense for headers, banners, and other visual elements where impact matters more than legibility.

I started by testing Butterpress in the hero section of the website. The headline read “Handmade with Love,” and the font gave it just the right amount of character. It didn’t feel too busy or too casual—it struck a balance between fun and professional. When paired with a clean sans serif font like Helvetica Neue for body copy, the contrast worked well, creating a clear visual hierarchy.

One thing I noticed early on was how Butterpress handled mobile screens. Because it’s a display font, I made sure to use it only for headlines and not for long paragraphs. On smaller screens, the details in the letters still came through clearly, which was a relief. I also tested it against dark and light backgrounds to see how it performed. On a light background, the font looked crisp and inviting. On darker tones, I added a slight white overlay to ensure readability.

For the product landing pages, I used Butterpress for section headings like “Our Collection” and “Why Choose Us.” It added a touch of personality without distracting from the product images. I even used it in call-to-action buttons, such as “Shop Now” and “Explore More.” The rounded edges and friendly appearance made the buttons feel more approachable, which aligned well with the brand’s tone.

When it comes to branding, consistency is key. I made sure to use Butterpress consistently across all major touchpoints—website headers, social media graphics, email headers, and even packaging design mockups. This helped reinforce the brand’s identity and created a cohesive look across different platforms.

Another consideration was font pairing. Since Butterpress is a decorative display font, I paired it with a simple sans serif for body text. This combination ensured that the content remained easy to read while still allowing the brand’s personality to shine through. For editorial sections, I experimented with a serif font for a more traditional feel, but ultimately went back to the sans serif because it felt more modern and aligned better with the brand’s aesthetic.

I also checked the font’s technical specifications. Butterpress is PUA encoded, which means it includes special characters and alternates that can be accessed via keyboard shortcuts in design software. This was helpful for adding unique touches to headlines and logos. It also supported multiple languages, which was important since the store planned to expand its reach internationally.

Before finalizing the font for the project, I made sure to verify the licensing. Since it was going to be used on a commercial website, I confirmed that the license allowed for web use and included the necessary file formats for embedding in the site. This step is crucial to avoid any legal issues down the line, especially when working with client projects or digital templates.

Overall, Butterpress proved to be a versatile choice. It brought a sense of playfulness and nostalgia to the brand without compromising professionalism. It worked well in a variety of contexts—from large headers to small buttons—and its retro-crafty style complemented the handmade nature of the products. If you’re looking for a display font that adds character to your digital designs, Butterpress is definitely worth considering.

Whether you're designing a creative portfolio, a course sales page, or a promotional landing page, Butterpress offers a unique way to elevate your typography. Just remember to use it thoughtfully, keeping readability and visual balance in mind. With the right pairing and application, it can become a valuable asset in your design toolkit.
